Even though there are no hard and strict rules regarding having first and second drivers in an F1 team, Mercedes and Red Bull have always decided to structure their driver hierarchy in doing so. It was Lewis Hamilton who was the poster boy of the Silver Arrows after Nico Rosberg’s departure. For Max Verstappen, the case was the same after Daniel Ricciardo left the team in 2019. However, Frederic Vasseur recently came ahead to share that Ferrari will not follow similar concepts with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz as per F1’s Beyond The Grid podcast.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are the two drivers driving for Ferrari currently. They have mostly been at par from the day they began their journey together as teammates. Nevertheless, there were talks about the Maranello-based team backing Leclerc for the world championship, therefore demoting Sainz to second fiddle.

However, according to Vasseur, the Italian team does not follow such concepts. He clarified his previous comments by saying that his stance on Leclerc receiving priority was misunderstood. Both Leclerc and Sainz get the same resources and preference from everyone at their base in Maranello.
Ferrari backs both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz
According to Fred Vasseur, Scuderia Ferrari believes in prioritizing both the drivers. Therefore, they are focused on building the team around both Sainz and Leclerc, instead of favoring just one.
The Frenchman also praised the duo as he said, “Both [Leclerc and Sainz] are doing a good job.” At the same time he also wanted them to improve with the team in the coming months.
However, the Ferrari boss also took note of how Verstappen, Hamilton, Vettel, and Schumacher ruled their respective teams once upon a time.

Snubbing them, the French boss put up his defense. He said that Ferrari focuses on their two drivers like McLaren did with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. With this, Vasseur also added that Sainz and Leclerc’s pairing brings a lot more to the team than just raw pace.
Enzo Ferrari’s son Piero Ferrari also backed the Leclerc-Sainz partnership
The partnership of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz received huge backing from almost all the places including Enzo Ferrari’s son. Piero Ferrari openly supported the duo and believes that they are the best driver pairing in F1 at the moment.
“Charles Leclerc is a smart driver, an extremely gifted guy in all respects, with extraordinary reflexes and great focus. Carlos Sainz has also proven to be a fast and reliable young man. They are superb, and they make the perfect match. Today, they are the best pair in the Championship,” he said as per Maxim.
Interestingly, this has come at a time when Sainz is linked with a move away from Ferrari. As per reports, Sainz’s father Carlos Sainz Sr. is in talks with Audi over his son’s future in the grid. However, the move has not materialized yet, and the Spaniard remains focused on his future with Ferrari.
