Shaquille O’Neal was a formidable figure in the NBA in his prime with a unique physical presence in the paint, which allowed him to dominate the league for almost two decades. Being 7’1″, Shaq was easily his era’s most athletic and physically dominant center who was also pretty quick for his size.

Shaq’s dominance was such that defenders had to figure out a hack to stop the Big Diesel from pouncing on them. Dubbed the Hack-a-Shaq, defenders would often foul Shaq within 15 feet of the basket, exploiting his weakness in shooting free throws.

Chris Dudley, however, would regret trying the Hack-a-Shaq on the Big Aristotle in a Lakers vs. Knicks game from the 1998-99 season. As Dudley tried his best guarding Shaq with immense intensity, the Lakers superstar posterized Dudley in what many regard as one of the most ‘disrespectful’ dunks of all time.

The Big Fella still remembers this moment quite fondly, as he reposted a clip of the same recently on his Instagram story. The clip famously features the commentary quote, “Chris Dudley just got overpowered by Shaquille O’Neal!”

Dudley’s reaction to the dunk was exactly as expected from someone getting posterized. He didn’t seem too happy about being shoved by Shaq inside the paint and was yelling about the same.

Years later, while speaking about this incident on the Pivot Podcast, Shaq said, “Because when I got the ball, and I’m looking, you motherf***ers aren’t doubling [double-teaming]. I take that as a sign of disrespect. You better double, triple me. I take it as a sign of disrespect.”

Many might think that it was Chris Dudley at fault for intending to try Hack-a-Shaq on the Big Diesel while he was trying to get into the paint. However, a seemingly frustrated Shaq kept shoving and pushing Dudley to record his iconic, posterizing dunk. No wonder this move from the Big Aristotle is still dubbed one of the most disrespectful dunks ever.

As the sidelines witnessed an intense drama between Shaq and Dudley, the league noticed Shaq shoving Dudley during this play. He was fined $3,500 for his actions following this game. This dunk, however, wasn’t completely out of the blue for Shaq. In fact, it was his way of avenging a flagrant foul on him by Dudley during a 1997 matchup against the Trail Blazers.

Indeed, the Big Diesel knows how to show rivals his immense prowess and dominance. This dunk, to this day, remains one of the nastiest posters in the history of the league.

Former NBA star John Salley recently made an appearance on FS1’s UNDISPUTED to talk basketball with Skip Bayless. Bayless hardly wasted any time during the show before bringing up the most widely-discussed and yet the most intriguing discussion on NBA television- Michael Jordan or LeBron James?

Quite unsurprisingly, Salley picked Michael Jordan as the clear winner of the GOAT debate, bringing a smile of satisfaction to Bayless’ face. However, he also laid out a detailed framework behind his conclusion.

The four-time NBA Champion prefaced his argument with the contributions of Jordan behind the modernization of the NBA. Salley pointed out that MJ’s global influence in the 90s ushered in the modern lucrative era in the NBA, the fruits of which superstars like LeBron James enjoy today.

However, Skip Bayless wasn’t satisfied with Jordan’s claim to the All-Time thrown merely because he was a trail blazer in the league from a financial perspective. He pressed Salley to dive deeper into the on-court heroics of the Chicago Bulls legend, especially when he faced the latter on the hardwood.

Salley recalled his Detroit Pistons days to describe the experience of facing Michael Jordan. “You don’t sleep well.…None of us slept well when we played against Michael. We wind up having an unbelievable concentration,” he told Bayless. The 59-year-old then detailed the unthinkable amount of focus that was required to keep up with Jordan throughout the course of a game. And that’s why he would rather have MJ on his team than any other great player.

Salley was clear in his reasoning for picking MJ over LeBron and other all-time greats as his GOAT pick. According to the former Chicago Bull, Jordan was the “original” who redefined the game forever. On the other hand, LeBron and others were merely “copies” who tried their best to emulate the Ghost in Chicago.

However, Salley did tip his hat to the incredible durability that LeBron James has shown in his career. “This kid [LBJ] was designed to play basketball…It’s amazing…I think he can play maybe as long as Tom Brady, maybe till he’s 45. Because right now it looks like he’s stronger than he’s ever been,” he added.

Salley concluded his remarks by saying that LeBron James’ game prompts a comparison with that of Magic Johnson, not Michael Jordan. Magic and LeBron both are point guards of the same size and they tend to impact the game in a similar manner.

Finally, Salley underlined the evolution of the game of basketball in the NBA and how that has helped modern players offensively. Bringing up a few changes in rules, like the abolition of hand-checking and the increased density of fouls, the former NBA star implied that the players playing now have a decided advantage over players from his era in all-time discussions.

“Obviously I love to play indoors. The last tournaments of the year are usually always indoors.

“I think I felt quite good today. Not only today but in the last month. This is a really important win for me and for the whole team and Italy together.

“We felt the pressure. We had a lot of responsibility. But still we managed. We stand up for it. We were excited. Obviously, everyone is really happy about the end result.

“I think he (Cahill) was really important for me, for how I was growing as a player, because I feel like he gave me a lot of confidence in one way. Obviously gave something new to the team. Mostly I think the combination with him and with Simone [Vagnozzi] and with all the whole team is really, really nice.”

Jannik Sinner 2024 season forecast

Jannik Sinner is arguably the most in-form player in tennis today even as Novak Djokovic continue to impress after his US Open 2023 win with titles such as the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals. Sinner has his eyes on the top 3 of the ATP rankings, although for that, he will need to improve his Grand Slam performances.

His best showing only came in the Wimbledon 2023 tournament, in which he made it to the semifinals for the first time in his career in a Majors. It did give a hint that he has worked on his game on grass, which has traditionally been his weakest surface. From analyzing how to find a couple of thousandths or hundredths of a second to attending strategy meetings and debriefs amid a plethora of other duties, a driver’s obligations take a massive toll on them.

“I think that’s one thing people don’t really realize — how intense it is from the moment, the first second we enter the paddock until Sunday night when we leave.”

He added once a race is over, the usual schedule of a driver is to go back to the hotel, grab dinner, talk to their families or partners, and go to sleep. The next day, it is back to the grind. Per Gasly, the days are very long, and the drivers rarely get any time to relax, however, many might believe that their weekdays are relatively light.

With an already hectic schedule, the added show of the Las Vegas GP made life tougher for the drivers who went to Sin City to compete in a race. An inauguration ceremony, added media and PR duties, and a delayed and extended FP2 session meant the drivers had to endure one of the toughest race weekends in recent history despite what happened in Qatar.

 

As the race in Vegas got over, a camera zoned in on an over-tired Daniel Ricciardo, whose eyes had nearly doubled in size due to the lack of sleep. His tensions increased when Ricciardo came to know that from next year, the Las Vegas GP will kick off a triple-header final month, after a week’s gap from the season’s penultimate triple-header.

As such, not only will the logistics around each of these races become extremely hard to manage, but the kind of physical and mental toll it will take on the drivers is unimaginable. Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan was not just an offensive maverick, but also one of the best defenders the league has ever seen. I want everyone on the other team to be looking over his shoulder-watching for me, thinking about where I am,” Jordan said, describing the kind of fear factor he deliberately wanted his opponents to feel.

The video also saw several former NBA stars describe the kind of defensive resilience Jordan regularly displayed. Horace Grant compared MJ to DC superhero Superman, claiming that Jordan had simply found a way to be “everywhere on the court.” Others talked about how MJ was super quick defensively, which meant that they needed to be aware of where he was at all points in time when they played the Bulls, just like Jordan envisaged.

Perhaps the greatest praise in the video came from former Bulls head coach, Phil Jackson. Jackson talked about how Jordan had an “attacking style of defending.” The legendary coach went on to explain that his defensive work meant that the ball was in jeopardy each time he was near it, as MJ had always been capable of knocking it loose when his opponents least expected it.

Regardless, while Jordan’s offensive accolades are regularly talked about, he was not a slouch when it came to defensive awards as well. MJ was selected as the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1988, and made the All-Defensive First Team a total of 9 times during his 15-year career. What’s more, Jordan was the NBA’s Steals leader in 1988, 1990, and 1993.

One of the members of the famous Bad Boy Pistons, MJ claimed that Dumars had a habit of studying his opponents and would actively force them into doing things they are not comfortable with. That, in turn, made it easier for Dumars to pull off steals and interceptions, something Jordan did not hesitate to praise the 1989 Finals MVP for.

Jon Rahm Reportedly ‘In Late-Stage Talks’ to Sign With LIV Golf

Jon Rahm is reportedly ‘in negotiations’ to join the Greg Norman-led league. The social media account Flushing It confirmed the news on its Twitter (now X) this week. The only thing that’s holding back the two-time major winner is the format; he’s apparently vying for some changes. “The holdup is not financial, but is due to him wishing to modify the format of the league.”

This comes as no surprise, as Rahm has never been critical of the league; moreover, he applauded LIV’s inclusion in the sport because that compelled the PGA Tour to raise its event purses. Unlike PGA Tour pros like Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and other notable golfers who fiercely criticize the Saudi-funded league every chance they get, Rahm has always chosen to not criticize LIV Golf in the open save for calling it out on its format. Instead, the Spaniard criticized the PGA Tour when it went ahead with a $3 billion merger with LIV Golf and the DP World Tour out of the blue, calling them out on their hypocrisy.

Jon Rahm Takes a Jab at the PGA Tour Over a Major Division

In an interview, Rahm reflected on his thoughts about how dividing golf by tours has been a bad idea and that the PGA Tour was responsible for creating that divide. “Two minutes before the announcement came out, someone from the PGA Tour contacted me and told me everything. I thought it was a joke. This is what they should have done from the beginning. Instead, they generated division and then decided to come together again”.

Rahm’s words quite clearly make it evident that he was frustrated with the PGA Tour. Recently, when he was given a choice to replace Rory McIlroy as the player director of the policy board, he sternly denied it and made it clear that he couldn’t invest his time in such extracurriculars. 

He also withdrew from the Hero World Challenge and TGL, the tech-based league of Tiger Woods. In his excuse, he said, “right now it would require a level of commitment that I can’t offer”. The timing of pulling out of these rosters and the rumors of joining LIV cannot be just a coincidence. 

And with Phil Mickelson telling people that Rahm is a “done deal” for LIV Golf and later denying it, people started drawing connections with his brother Tim, who was Rahm’s college coach.

If Jon Rahm were to join LIV Golf, he would specifically opt to be on Sergio Garcia’s team as a probable substitution for Carlos Otriz in Fireballs GC, which is an all-Spanish franchise. Perhaps Rahm might have his own team.

After winning the Masters Tournament, Rahm gained an exemption from all the majors for the next five years. So, a worry regarding competing in the majors is not an issue. But what could be a nail in the coffin would be his chances of playing in the Ryder Cup. Rahm has played in the past three editions and is one of the best players on the European squad. He was the leading scorer for his team in the 2021 defeat at Whistling Straits and one of just three players to remain unbeaten in September in Rome. 

If Rahm were to depart, the PGA Tour would probably be the most affected. In 2023, he participated in just two regular DP World Tour events. Whether the 2023 Masters champion will join LIV Golf, only time will tell.

Despite ‘Smooth Sailing’ in 2022, George Russell Believes Mercedes’ 2023 Season Is ‘Pretty Crazy’

George Russell had an outstanding debut season with Mercedes in 2022 as he finished fourth in the championship, ahead of seven-time world champion teammate Lewis Hamilton. Russell won a race and grabbed eight podiums over the course of the 2022 campaign. However, the 25-year-old has struggled to achieve a similar level of consistency this season. With just one podium in 21 races, Russell believes he has had a “pretty crazy” year.

Russell said as per The Telegraph, “Last year was plain sailing. I wouldn’t say it was anything special. It felt like a pretty normal season.” With this, he further added, “If I had had a smooth season like last year, we could have been on the podium eight or nine times this year. Instead, we’re sitting here now with one podium to my name. And I find that pretty crazy.”

Russell has had a disappointing season this year as he is only eighth in the championship. Moreover, Mercedes have also struggled more this season despite being second in the Constructors’ Championship currently. The Silver Arrows just have a four-point cushion over Ferrari and have been massively inconsistent this year.

As for Russell, he has not only struggled to deliver himself but his season has also been hampered due to several reliability issues. That’s not it, as the 25-year-old has also had some on-track tensions with senior Mercedes teammate Hamilton.

The Mercedes duo collided against each other on the opening lap of the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix. While Hamilton accepted fault for the collision, it did cost Russell and Mercedes massively as the team were aiming for a double podium in that race.

George Russell and Mercedes lost the momentum after the Brazil GP

Mercedes has struggled massively in the past few races and the race in Brazil perhaps was their worst of the 2023 season. George Russell registered an unfortunate DNF to his name while Lewis Hamilton just managed to finish eighth.

This was the point where Mercedes lost the momentum. They are now also on the verge of losing their P2 in the Constructors’ Championship, which could see them losing out on an extra $10 million prize money.

Nevertheless, Russell and his team still have the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP in hand this weekend to make amends. Once it is over, the Silver Arrows then can shift all their focus to building their 2024 F1 challenger with a whole different layout.

From the outset of the company, that’s been our ambition.”

The Mercedes star revealed that Horner contacted him on his old phone. And since it was too late for him to speak about business, Hamilton only wished Horner good for having a successful year in 2022. But the Mercedes star also comes out strongly against Horner for ‘spreading misinformation’.

Nevertheless, whatever Horner claims about Hamilton reaching Red Bull is redundant as the latter has already signed an extension with Mercedes. Meanwhile, Sergio Perez is confirmed to remain at Milton Keynes for 2023.

Boston Celtics greats Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce recently talked about their experience playing alongside Shaquille O’Neal. Shaq played for the Celtics back in the 2010-11 season, which proved to be his final year as a professional. O’Neal was 38 years old when he moved from Cleveland and was well past his prime.

However, both Pierce and Garnett seemed confident that the Celtics would have won the championship had O’Neal not gotten hurt, according to their appearance on the ‘Ticket and the Truth’ podcast. Shaq underwent a hip injury after helping the Celtics get off to a 17-4 start to the Regular Season.

O’Neal started the season as a starter but ended up missing a plethora of games due to his hip. That, according to the former Celtics’ duo, was one of the biggest reasons why they ended up not winning the championship that season in 2010-11.

Garnett claimed that apart from the impact O’Neal had on the team, he was also fun to be around. “We only wish we got him earlier. He hurt his hip… We could have did some s**t. Shaq was fun man. Never a dull moment either,” he said. 

Paul Pierce, on the other hand, responded by claiming that he was confident the Celtics would have returned with the championship had it not been for O’Neal’s injury. “I am telling you, if we had him healthy I think we would have won it that year. We was like, a great start before Diesel got hurt,” he claimed.

O’Neal did not actually play the final four games of the Celtics’ 23-4 run, which his team still won. Regardless, Pierce concluded by talking about how they had beaten LeBron James and the Miami Heat as well, during this run. “We beat Miami, with LeBron, yeah he was rolling…We were 23 and 4 before Diesel got hurt,” he said.

Hence, while O’Neal, even at the age of 38, was a blessing for the Celtics, that was not the only reason why the pair was impressed. Asked about what kind of teammate Shaq was, both Garnett and Pierce claimed that O’Neal was extremely fun to be around, and completely changed the team dynamic.

Pierce, despite his high standards, could only think of one area which proved to be problematic for him, with respect to Shaq. He claimed that O’Neal would end up taking up as many as 3 seats whenever he sat on the bench alongside him. Jokes apart, however, both Garnett and PP seemed confident that they would have won their 2nd ring with the Celtics, had O’Neal remained healthy.

While O’Neal was never able to add to his 4 rings, the last of which came in 2006 with the Heat, he was determined to add to his kitty. Speaking after his move to the Celtics, Shaq had claimed that it was only about winning, for him, according to ESPN.

“I still have hunger, I still can play, I still want to win. When I close my book at the end of the day it’s all about winning, nothing else,” he said. 

O’Neal went on to reveal that he had multiple teams interested in the offseason, but wanted to join a team he could help win a championship. “This summer I had many options but I wanted to be with a team that was used to winning, with a team that was one or two pieces away. I think it’s a good fit.” Shaq claimed.

Hence, while the 5th ring never arrived, O’Neal effectively spent the final years of his career looking for it. The intention behind his move to the Cleveland Cavaliers a season before was the same, something which was also apparent when he joined the Boston Celtics. Of course, while the championship did not arrive, O’Neal had a memorable time with the Celtics and obviously made an impression on his teammates as well.

Jannik Sinner has a golden opportunity to wrap up a watershed 2023 season by lifting the ATP Finals trophy. It has been a season of firsts for the Italian who scaled new heights this year. The team behind the player deserves credit for transforming him from a fledgling, promising youngster to a world-beating elite player.

Jannik Sinner worked with his teenage coach till February 2022. He then onboarded Simone Vagnozzi, who had kept tabs on the World No.4 since he was 14. A couple of months later in July, renowned coach Darren Cahill joined the team. The Australian coach, who was also involved with Roger Federer, has previously worked with Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt, and Simona Halep.

The duo have worked wonders with Sinner. Before them, his biggest achievement was winning the ATP 500 Washington Open in 2021. In about one and a half years, Sinner has become one of the top players in the world. With a massive haul of ATP points since hiring Cahill, he has established himself as a serious contender. He lifted his first ATP 1000 title at the 2023 Canadian Open under the tutelage of Cahill and Vagnozzi. He followed it up with two ATP 500 championships in October and is now one win away from his maiden ATP Finals title.

His rise under the eyes of Vagnozzi and Cahill propelled him to a career-best World No.4 rank. The duo work together to train Sinner but the latter described the Italian coach as “the one that’s really steering the ship” (via ATP Tour). Vagnozzi is more hands-on with his player, sharpening his technical side with daily training sessions. Cahill, meanwhile, also joins them for these sessions but primarily focuses on developing Sinner’s mental side.

The two coaches are joined by physio Giacomo Naldi and fitness coach Umberto Ferrara. The pair is responsible for keeping Sinner in his best shape and warming him up adequately before Cahill and Vagnozzi take over. All four of Sinner’s regular coaching team have a fixed routine that they abide by. His metamorphosis proves that their efforts are paying off.

The old team that developed a young Jannik Sinner

Before completely overhauling his staff, Sinner worked with his teenage coach for eight years. The Italian was trained by Riccardo Piatti from the age of 13 to 21 before Vagnozzi replaced him. Piatti, who had formerly worked with Novak Djokovic and Milos Raonic, developed Sinner into a young talent full of potential.

Piatti was joined by Andrea Volpini and Massimo Sartori, both high-profile coaches in Italy. Sinner continued to work with the former two until he rang in the changes last year. In addition to the 2021 Washington Open, he also finished runner-up in the 2021 Miami Open. This was his best finish in an ATP Masters event before winning the Canadian Open this year under his new coaches.

Sinner also won four ATP 250 titles with Piatti and Volpini. They were aided by physiotherapist Claudio Zimaglia and fitness coach Dalibor Sirola. His initial team got him noticed by the tennis fraternity. But it was his new team headed by Vagnozzi and Cahill that made Jannik Sinner the elite player he is today and will continue to push him to greater heights.

Though fans in Washington might have been harsh on the 2022 champion, his teammates surely have his back. In a post-game conference following the Knicks game, fellow guard Tyus Jones supported Jordan Poole and said, “He’s [Poole] probably putting a little too much pressure on himself, but it comes from a place of care and wanting to be great and wanting to succeed. Wanting to play well for not only himself but for his teammates, for the city, for the organization.”

Jones further said that JP puts the work in practice and contrary to popular belief, really cares about the team. The 27-year-old seemed hopeful that things would work out for the former Dubs guard.

Jordan Poole played a major role in the Golden State Warriors’ 2022 campaign and was often called the ‘third Splash Brother’. Poole was personally mentored by the Big 3 – Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson, who helped fuel his drive to succeed. The 2022 postseason was Poole’s breakout year, with him averaging 17 points on shooting 50.8% overall and 39% on three-pointers.

However, all of that didn’t last long as the Warriors traded Poole after his fall from grace since the beginning of the 2022-2023 season. After moving to the Wizards, Poole was hopeful to bring the Championship culture along with him to the team. Perhaps only time can tell whether he can use this chance to establish himself as a franchise player.
