When it comes to top drivers at superspeedways in the top flight of NASCAR, a few names would come in the minds of the fans. There’s Ryan Blaney, who has 2 wins in the Next Gen era along with 3 finishes inside the Top 5. There’s also the name of Denny Hamlin who has won the Daytona 500 thrice in his career. One could also throw the names of drivers such as Chase Elliott or Joey Logano in the top drivers at superspeedways conversation.

But none of those names could top the driver who had the best average starting position at superspeedways in the 2023 season. That driver is Aric Almirola, and his average starting position at plate tracks in the recently concluded NASCAR season was 2.50. In fact, Almirola’s average start position on superspeedways was more than any other driver on any other type of racetrack.

The former Stewart-Haas Racing driver was followed by Joey Logano (5.33), who was just ahead of the current Cup champion Ryan Blaney (5.83). Kyle Larson (6.50) and Chase Briscoe (8.17) were the other two drivers who made the top 5 on this list.

It’s worth pointing out that 2023’s Daytona 500 winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. ranked third-worst on this list in 34th place (31.17),

It goes without saying that superspeedways are the essential ingredients of the NASCAR experience. So it’s only natural that the drivers who have tamed these really unpredictable racetracks the most are also in contention of being termed as the very best drivers in the history of the sport.

For instance, the driver who has the most wins at Talladega Superspeedway is none other than Dale Earnhardt Sr. The Intimidator won there 10 times in his career. That’s 4 more wins than Jeff Gordon, Dale Jr., and Brad Keselowski in 2nd place.

When it comes to the Daytona 500, the driver who has won it the most number of times is ‘The King’ of NASCAR, Richard Petty who won the Great American Race 7 times in his career. The only active driver who could become only second to Petty is Denny Hamlin who has 3 Daytona 500 wins to his name. One more win for Hamlin and he would equal Cale Yarborough (4).

Jon Rahm‘s season began with a triumph at Sentry with two strokes over Collin Morikawa. This was just the first of four season wins at the PGA Tour. He also won the Masters Tournament in April by defeating Brooks Koepka. Like the start of the golf season, it also ended with a bang for Rahm. The two-time major winner appeared in a black LIV jacket. 

Thus, an intriguing question that kept everybody speculating was: why? The man who was against the format just switched his morals for money? Or was he unhappy in his previous circuit? An attempt to answer all these questions is made by considering the overall incidents throughout the year. 

Why did Jon Rahm betray his golf circuit? 

Jon Rahm’s move was quite unexpected by the golf community. Moreover, while rumors were circulating about his switch, he stayed silent. But a golfer who was against the format of LIV switched for money? In his past press conference statements, he clearly said that no amount of money could make him go to LIV. 

His vague justifications were like, “best for me and my family”. Then, he said he likes LIV products, and the venture will help him grow. Moreover, he guarded his friends, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, from being a reason for his decision. He admitted that he didn’t receive any Ryder Cup assurance. 

Added to these, he continued,

“I can’t really speak on what their plan is for all this and their future, but clearly they’re trying to create a positive impact in sports. And, you know, I’m happy that in a small way, I can maybe help with that.”

Looking at his statements, one can conclude that his answers were scripted, and he only revealed the answers that would tackle the sensitivity of the situation.

In one of the interviews, he explained that this was the right time for him to move to LIV Golf. Rahm had gotten an offer previously, but in 2023, he won a major and has won other events. Also, with the golf scenario changing, he chose this to be the right timing. Rahm didn’t blame the PGA Tour, but his statements indicated that the tour was lacking something. 

One of the many reasons he stated for his move was his family.

“As a father, as a husband, as a family man I do owe it to my family to set them up the best I can.”

But, underneath this reason, lay the truth. He used the timing as leverage, with exemptions for majors, including at the Augusta National. Also, with two years remaining to the Ryder Cup, there’s plenty of time to sort things out. 

His move to LIV, just before the framework agreement, also highlights that he might be a pawn to the PIF in this deal. The player director, Jordan Spieth, sees this in the same way. Rahm’s departure has indeed turned the tables. Now, it is time to see who joins him next in the league.

This recently resurfaced photo on X(formerly Twitter) prompted fans to remember Len Bias once again and recall how he could have been the centerpiece of the mighty Boston Celtics.

Timeless Sports recently posted an iconic photograph from 1980 of Len Bias and Michael Jordan competing for the basketball at the Five-Star Basketball camp. Six years after that photograph was taken, Len Bias would be drafted by the Boston Celtics as the #2 overall pick of the 1986 NBA Draft. Two days after that, on June 19, 1986, Bias would pass away from a drug overdose.

 

There’s no guarantee that Bias would have been an all-time player if he were alive. However, there’s enough evidence to suggest that he certainly had the talent to become one. In fact, this Andscape article by even quotes the Celtics President Red Auerbach’s words on the day Boston drafted Bias, “Larry Bird said that if we draft Bias, he’s going to come up to the rookie camp.”

Bias averaged 23.2 points and 7 rebounds in the final year of his stint in Maryland. There’s no doubt that Larry Bird was looking forward to welcoming him in Boston as his protégé.

The Boston Celtics-Chicago Bulls rivalry that never happened

20th April, 1986, months before Bias’ death, Michael Jordan dropped 63 points at the Boston Garden. This performance by a second-year player would prompt Larry Bird to say, “God Disguised as Michael Jordan.”

However, Jordan couldn’t save the Bulls from a 0-3 sweep against a loaded Celtics side. That year, the Larry Bird-led Boston side would win their last NBA Championship. However, the story could have been very different with a healthy Len Bias on the roster.

A starting line-up of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Len Bias, and Robert Parish would be a powerhouse in any era in the NBA. And perhaps Bias would have gathered enough experience to rival the rise of the Bulls under Michael Jordan in the East, as the centerpiece of the Celtics dynasty, even after Bird’s retirement in 1992. But then again, we would never find out what would have happened. We can only say what if…

Carlos Sainz Glad Ferrari Tended to Its Biggest Wound in 2023, Now Onto the Rest

Ferrari and strategic mistakes probably have an inseparable bond, at least that is the perception in F1. However, Carlos Sainz has nullified this perception to claim that the Italian outfit has improved on its strategy. Sainz believes that in 2023, strategic errors were not Ferrari’s Achilles’ heel as many assume it is. The Spaniard cited that with strategy taken care of, they will now look to improve other aspects in 2024.

Speaking to Motorsport-Total, Sainz explained, “I really believe that we didn’t lose that many points this year with the strategy. We didn’t get it right in some races, yes, but it wasn’t our Achilles’ heel.”

Sainz further highlighted that probably Mercedes and Red Bull also made strategic mistakes this season. Usually, both these teams implement their race strategies well. Hence, Sainz believes that only “If we (Ferrari) made more mistakes, then maybe there is still something to optimize. But it is a long way away of being our Achilles heel.”

Now having spent three seasons at the Italian outfit, the 29-year-old has gained a good understanding of how strategic operations work on the team pit wall. There is some substance in his claim as Ferrari has reduced strategic mistakes indeed relative to 2022.

Last season, multiple fumbles cost Charles Leclerc and even Carlos Sainz some great results. The 2022 Monaco GP is a classic case in point. Ferrari confused Leclerc’s strategy due to ill-timed pit stops and this resulted in him losing the race win and the podium too.

Similarly, in Silverstone, Ferrari kept the Monegasque out on old tires despite everyone pitting for fresh rubber following a late safety car. As a result, Leclerc once again failed to clinch the win or even a podium.

In contrast, 2023 did not see such big blunders. In fact, it was just the lack of pace of the Ferrari that resulted in them struggling to fight for wins.

Therefore, Sainz believes that instead of strategy, tire wear and race pace are Ferrari’s biggest weaknesses now. Regardless, these aspects do impact the strategic calls as well, so the Italian team needs to tighten these aspects too. With a 95% overhaul for 2024, the Spaniard will hope these issues get ironed out in the new car.

Is Ferrari finally going to take the step up in 2024?

After 2022 being a false dawn and 2023 being an underwhelming year, Ferrari has taken a very coy and laid-back pre-season tone for next year. Significant changes are coming to the 2024 car as team boss Frederic Vasseur claimed.

Vasseur stated that it won’t be a revolution, but they are changing 95% of the car. The Frenchman stated, “The expectation is that we are focused on ourselves. We are doing a good step forward.” However, the Ferrari boss is also aware that they cannot be complacent since their rivals will improve as well.

Vasseur highlighted that they are looking to keep up the momentum and that is motivating them for this dramatic overhaul. The 2023 season was certainly a step back from last season. Falling to third in the constructors won’t be acceptable to anyone at Maranello.

Therefore, Vasseur and the rest of the team are trying to manage expectations. With a launch date set for February 13, for the 2024 car, Ferrari will hope they can find enough pace over the winter to develop a consistent car capable of a championship challenge.

Perez had a very inconsistent season in 2023. Since he had a promising start to the campaign with two wins after the first four races, it seemed like a title battle between the Red Bull teammates was on the cards.

However, Verstappen obliterated every opposition that stood his way towards the championship. On the other hand, Perez’s performance also dipped drastically. He failed to appear nine times in the Q3 of qualifying rounds this year, five of which came in a row from Monaco to the British Grand Prix.

Therefore, there was a huge gap between the two drivers in 2023, which is also symbolized by the points table as Verstappen (575) finished with more than double Perez’s points (285). For a significant amount of period, Perez even risked losing his P2 in the championship standings to Lewis Hamilton.

This situation even propelled reports of Perez losing his seat. Although Red Bull shunned the narrative, the future of the 33-year-old continues to hang in the balance.

Sergio Perez can’t be guaranteed a seat in 2025

Once Sergio Perez wrapped the P2 in the standings, his exit rumors died down. However, 2024 would be way different for Perez than this year. Since the grid is likely to be more competitive, Red Bull will need consistent results to assert their dominance.

So, Perez couldn’t afford to repeat his 2023 season and expect Red Bull to not do anything about it. Moreover, his current contract with the team is also coming to an end at the end of 2024. Therefore, he would need to present a stronger case for the Milton Keynes outfit to extend his stay for the 2025 season and beyond.

The only saving grace for Perez would be if Red Bull fails to spot a suitable replacement. It’s certainly not easy to be teammates with Verstappen, and Perez’s predecessors are the right testaments for that. So, it all depends on whether anyone else is prepared to be in the league of the current world champion.

It also depends on how well AlphaTauri drivers perform, especially Daniel Ricciardo. For a while, he has been spotted as the most suitable replacement. However, he has yet to make a stronger case for Red Bull to consider him for a promotion.

Red Bull was found to be violating the 2021 cost cap, for which their 2023 wind tunnel time was reduced. So Red Bull decided to limit their RB19 development and save time for their 2024 car development.

Meaning, they hardly ever upgraded RB19 after a certain point in the season. Hence, Lewis Hamilton even raised concerns about how Red Bull is going to be uncatchable in 2024. The Briton believes that their team are carrying the legacy of their 2023 car with a humungous wind tunnel time in their kitty.

However, Christian Horner has interestingly revealed that other teams are going to be closer to Red Bull’s designs in 2024. Therefore, there is a slight hope that there could be a tough competition if any team gets their design right. Chiefs Fans Left Up in Arms After Same Officiating Crew Gives Broncos WR a Free Pass Reigniting the Offside Debate

The Chiefs matchup against the Bills a couple of weeks ago ended in controversy when the ref’s offside call denied Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney a last-minute game-clinching TD. However, the same officiating crew seemingly gave the Broncos a free pass.

The Orange Crush faced the Patriots on Sunday when star WR Jerry Jeudy was caught on camera stepping way beyond the line of scrimmage. The Chiefs Nation couldn’t help but call out the officiating crew for the ambiguity. This occurred in the 2nd quarter when the Broncos quickly lined up just so they could snap the ball. Jeudy, lined up on the left side of the offensive line, was caught standing at least a foot beyond the neutral zone.

He appeared to ask the sideline ref about his starting position, but before the ref could signal anything, the ball was snapped, and then the kicker was brought in to attempt a 57-yard field goal. However, it’s worth noting that, unlike Toney, Jerry didn’t touch the ball. The Broncos even ended up missing the field goal. However, the Chiefs WR was offside by the slightest of margins when compared to Denver’s WR.

Nonetheless, this was still enough fuel for the Chiefs fans, who took to social media to complain about the inconsistent nature of offside calls in the league. As this matchup was monitored by the same crew, fans were quick to call the officials out.

Chiefs Nation Demand Justice

The same crew that officiated the Chief’s loss against the Bills interestingly took the field in black & white for the Broncos-Patriots game. During the game, the refs failed to acknowledge a clear offside infraction by Denver’s Jerry Jeudy. This was enough fodder for already angry Chiefs fans who tore into NFL officials and their ambiguous calls.

Fans were up in arms on X. They said-

One fan said, “That ref had the Bills money line ! “.

Another one wrote, “So Pat Mahomes and Reid’s anger was justified. Nice.”

A fan chimed in, “Was this not called ??!! “.

A user commented “Cheffers should be arrested.”

Another stated, “Toneys was ” egregious enough” with his foot on the line, meanwhile this no-call is nearly a whole yard ahead it looks like? officiating especially this season is an absolute joke.”

While others wrote, “Ever since Kelce rightfully called Cheffers a foot locker reject, he has had it out for the Chiefs.”

While Cheffers & crew escaped without scrutiny or punishment, Travis Kelce was once fined for criticizing referee Carl Cheffers back in 2017. Kelce called out the ref for a holding penalty on LT Eric Fisher after the 2017 AFC Divisional Round loss against the Steelers. He was fined $12,500 for his comments and an additional $9,115 for his unnecessary roughness penalty. Travis had said,

“Referee No. 51 shouldn’t even be able to wear a zebra jersey ever again. He shouldn’t even be able to work at f–king Foot Locker,” as reported by the Bleacher Report.

Despite no offside call, the Broncos went on the loose the game, courtesy of a last-minute field goal by the Patriots. They now only have a 4% chance of making the playoffs, as per the New York Times. The loss proved beneficial for their divisional rivals, Kansas. With just a single win, they can confirm their spot in the postseason.

Many fans grew up playing the God of War titles based in the Greek pantheon. Whether it’s nostaliga or being one of the most played titles, they only need an excuse to play those games.

In a Q&A video on the Mercedes YouTube channel, Wolff explained what is a pumpernickel and how often he has it. He said, “Yeah I still have the pumpernickel. It’s my routine on race weekend. It’s just a whole-grain bread that is very compressed. And I like that in the morning, because it’s, you know I just feel good after eating it.”

Pumpernickel is a dense dark rye bread that originated in Germany. The 51-year-old revealed how he feels good after having the dense bread and how it also helps him focus on Mercedes’ betterment. Wolff also had ordered some tomato, butter, and salt besides the aforementioned breakfast order in season 4 of Drive To Survive.

For drinking, the Mercedes boss ordered espresso with lactose-free milk. It seems like Wolff is very particular with his food habits. So much so that he often eats the same thing and wears the same clothes regularly when Mercedes is competing in the F1 season.

Fans on social media reacted bizarrely to Wolff’s breakfast routine when they watched Drive to Survive in 2022.

Wolff highlighted how a dragonfly is built or born with precision. The 51-year-old likes the preciseness of a dragonfly’s body structure. The 51-year-old now hopes that his side build a dragonfly-like precise car for 2024 at Brackley.

However, Mercedes doesn’t have the strategic advantage of extra wind tunnel time as Ferrari and McLaren do after they finished lower in the standings. But, Wolff is not worried about it as he reasoned why the team pushed to finish P2.

They were much more focused on the financial gain of finishing second rather than the sporting advantage of more wind tunnel time. Wolff explained that the bonus component and motivation for people at the factory and the team were more important and relevant for the Silver Arrows.

He recalled a time when he was with the PGA Tour and missed the cut in 14 events, which had him lose around $70,000 in just participation. In episode 3 of the Good Good Podcast, Bryson DeChambeau talked with the host, Garrett Clark, and spoke about the necessary change that LIV Golf has brought. He emphasized that things have been different on the PGA Tour lately where players now make at least $500,000. But, he added that it would not have been possible if some of the players did not join the Breakaway series.

“It’s little different now. I will specify, it is a little bit different now which luckily for LIV we were part of. The change where we were able to make the top one. Well, all PGA Tour players, at least, make $500,000 for the year. Which is awesome. And I had been advocating that from the beginning when I missed 14 Cuts in a row. I was lucky enough to have sponsors with me. The guys that didn’t… they lost money,” Bryson DeChambeau said.

Bryson DeChambeau added that he has always been the spokesperson for the top 200 players on the PGA Tour. He said that they should have made a little bit of money for having the Tour card.

“I always advocated for those top 200 guys on the PGA Tour. Everybody that had Tour card, they should at least be getting neutral to making a little bit. You should, at least, be making a little bit of money from my perspective,” DeChambeau said.

How Much Money Did Bryson DeChambeau Earn on the PGA Tour and LIV Golf So Far?

Starting with his PGA Tour career, DeChambeau has made 144 starts on the leading Northern American golf tour. He made it inside the cut line in 102 events and recorded 37 top-10 finishes. He has been victorious in eight instances, including a major win in 2020 at the US Open. Through his performances, the 30-year-old American golfer earned a sum of $27,479,287 before leaving the Tour.

On the contrary, the LIV golfer has accumulated a whopping $20,645,677 while playing with the Saudi-funded league. He left the PGA Tour in 2022 and has played 21 events in two seasons. Interestingly, eight million dollars out of his overall earnings have come from his two victories at the Greenbrier and Chicago Invitationals.
